For over 50 years, Third Street has worked with New York City schools to provide music instruction to their students. Third Street collaborates with public, private and charter schools throughout the five boroughs.
The goal of these partnerships is simple: to change the lives of students for the better through music and dance.
Thanks to its generous network of supporters, Third Street is able to subsidize the cost of its classes in public schools. At many schools, this amounts to a 25% reduction in the cost of the program.
In addition to the classes taught at your school, your students will have access to our Partners at Third Street program, which offers free and reduced-rate group lessons for an academic year on a wide range of instruments.
Partner students have access to all of Third Street's choirs, orchestras, and bands. Students who choose to take private lessons at Third Street can participate in these ensembles at a discounted rate. Financial aid is also available for these activities.
Third Street is a leader in community arts education, having provided music instruction in New York City for over 130 years, and having partnered with NYC public schools since the 1960s.
Third Street's teaching artists are active performers as well as educators. They live to sing, dance, play musical instruments, improvise, share their love of the arts, and teach. Their classes are energetic, interactive, and fun.
A partnership with Third Street is more than a class; it is an invitation to join the Third Street community and collaborate in making music and the arts a vital part of the curriculum. A class at your school is only the first step in your students' lifelong journey in music.
From hip-hop dance to African percussion, rock band to wind band, Third Street's broad array of programs give you a myriad of options for building music into your curriculum.
Third Street's approach is aligned with national standards, while offering room to accommodate the educational approach of each school.
Third Street programs strive for continuity including: weekly instruction, long term residencies running an average of 25 weeks (with our longest programs lasting 32 weeks), and annual partnerships spanning decades. The Partners program recognizes the value of long-lasting relationships and works to pair faculty with sites over the course of multiple years, empowering students to develop their artistic identity. These partnerships enrich the communities that they serve by holding informal and formal performances to celebrate the students’ hard work and achievements.
Each Third Street Partners program offers instruction that is tailored to the specific site. Curriculum and repertoire are chosen to expose students to multicultural songs as well as works that celebrate the students’ unique experiences and backgrounds. Instruction is adapted to best serve all types of learners in order engage and inspire every student.
Our Partners faculty are unique, passionate and skilled artists, with years of teaching experience and certifications in Orff, Kodaly and Alexander Techniques. Each partnership benefits from the varying specialties and experiences of the teaching artist matched with their site. Third Street provides continued access to educational training and professional development for its faculty members, supporting the implementation of progressive teaching strategies and techniques.
Students from partnering public schools can apply for one year of free group classes at Third Street as part of our Partners at Third Street Program, ensuring that each student is given the opportunity to reach their full potential as artists. After the first year, there are scholarships and financial aid programs in place to support students as they gain proficiency and mastery through private lessons and ensembles.
